Home Design Dreams

My first Internship was in Holy Cow Studios (Mumbai, India) that lasted for 3 months. I worked on a couple of projects, and Home Design Dreams was the project that I worked on from the beginning. It is currently hosted on google play store and apple ios stores.

Game Trailer

Home Design Dreams is a mysterious Match 3 game for smartphones that is a quick casual game with simple story elements. The game is based in chapters, and progression unlocks parts of these stories. The plot is based around empty houses, accompanied by a narrator that helps in filling these up. Each house has its own story, and these are a mix of happy and sad events that have taken place at each place. By playing the match 3 part, players unlock furniture that further unlocks the story parts.

Development

In-game screen grabs

This project was different from all the projects I've worked on previously during my undergrad years, since adding story elements to a Match 3 game, and keeping the players immersed seemed difficult. I worked with another game design intern, and we collectively designed the plot for this project. We were briefed on what the project had - A match 3 system and furnitures.

Hence, we decided to go with developing stories in a chapter format, hence it would help with the monetisation plan.

We decided to keep the flow as simple as possible, that is, dividing each case/house into 3-4 rooms. Any furniture they purchased had a dialogue allotted to it. Each room unlocked a crucial part of the story at the end of completion, which when put together, formed a whole story.
To make the story immersive, the character which our players assumed the role of, was usually kept related with the house.
I've attached a document which shows a glimpse of how the dialogues were designed.
